Austin is widely recognized as one of the best places for small businesses. Yet there are still challenges facing small businesses in Austin. These challenges often go hand in hand with neighborhood challenges, demonstrated by the recent announcement that Wal-mart will be moving into North Cross Mall. This large scale development could affect traffic, crime, and both the business and residential demographics of the area.

- Dan Houston is a partner of Civic Economics. Civic Economics is a consulting group that has done numerous projects analyzing the economic impact of small and large businesses on communities.
- Steve Bercu is the President and a founding member of the Austin Independent Business Alliance, as well as the President and Co-owner of BookPeople.” The Austin Independent Business Alliance works to promote locally owned businesses and speak to the concerns of independent businesses.
- Rosalinda Jalifi is the Small Business Development Program Administrator for the City of Austin. The Small Business Development Program was created to develop and empower small businesses.
- Jaime Noyola of PeopleFund. PeopleFund is a federally certified Community Development Financial Institution that has made loans to small businesses and other groups to promote good economic policy decisions for communities.
